Sa Platja Petita & Sa Platja Gran – Hidden Beaches in a Restricted Zone
Two fascinating coves with turquoise water that you can never visit. Nestled within a military restricted area, they remain a silent chapter of the island’s history—but their mystery continues to ignite the imagination.
Locked Down and Mysterious – The Quiet Beaches of Cap des Pinar
The two beaches Sa Platja Gran and Sa Platja Petita are located on Mallorca’s northern coast at Cap des Pinar, a peninsula west of Alcúdia. By location and nature, they would be dreamlike retreats: secluded, pristine, and boasting a breathtaking view over the Bay of Pollença.
But there’s a big but:
Both beaches lie within an active military restricted zone. Since the mid-20th century, the area has served as a military training ground, which still prohibits public access.
Unlike many other Mallorcan beaches, there is no legal way to set foot there—neither on foot nor by boat. Only in exceptional cases—for the Spanish royal family or during early pilot projects—was temporary access allowed. These attempts were never made permanent.
Yet the place retains a special allure:
The beaches appear on digital maps, some hikers mention old access paths, and the idea of an inaccessible, untouched spot sparks curiosity—perhaps even longing.
Landing is prohibited. Neither on foot, nor by bike, nor from the water is allowed.
The area remains part of a historical military base still in operation.
🚫 Not publicly accessible!
Platja Gran and Platja Petita are located within an active restricted zone.
Access is forbidden—on foot, by bike, or via sea.
Location
Situated roughly between Platja de s’Illot and Cap des Pinar, northwest of Alcúdia, but behind military checkpoints.
